HISTORY
Davidson's Apiaries Ltd is a family business originally established by Robert Davidson Snr in 1945. In 1985 his son Robert Davidson Jnr took over as Managing Director. In October 1995 Mr Davidson Jnr celebrated 50 years in the family business.
Since Davidson's Apiaries inception we have been in the business of beekeeping, packing and supplying the local market with house brand honey and our own Davidson's brand to the two largest wholesalers in New Zealand. We have supplied one of these house brands continuously for over 40 years.
LOCATION
The office and manufacturing facilities are located in a country environment on 10 acres of land on the outskirts of Timaru. The beehives are located throughout the South Canterbury area in New Zealand, situated on rural land from the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean.
DIVERSIFICATION
In 1993 the company sought a different direction and decided to look at natural beehive based products that would provide therapeutic health benefits as Mr Davidson himself suffered a debilitating skin disorder.
After two years of searching for a product from the hive that would relieve his skin problem, Mr Davidson discovered two extracts, which are unique to Davidson's' Apiaries and have patents pending. After naming the product Apis Mellifera - the Latin name for the honeybee - it was introduced to the New Zealand market where within the first month 27,000 units were sold.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
After significant research and development into the two extracts new product lines were introduced to the Apis Mellifera Skin Care range. Development then commenced in the dietary supplement field and Pollenaze was developed. A patent for this product has now been applied for.
Continued research into existing and potential products is a vital part of the company's future. The Apis Mellifera Skin Care Cream was put through a pilot study at the Wellington School of Medicine as a treatment for eczema on school children, which was enormously successful. Subsequently a full-scale medical trial has been conducted and we are presently awaiting these results. We also have a number of other products undergoing final testing before being released on the market. We are working towards obtaining recognition of the medical benefits of these products by the international scientific community.
QUALITY CONTROL AND PRODUCTION
Davidson's Apiaries operates in accordance with New Zealand's Department of Health Food Standards and the New Zealand Standards Q-Base Quality Control System through Telarc NZ Ltd. Organic status was obtained from AgriQuality NZ Ltd in June 2000. The company's common practises have complied with the conditions of the Organic guidelines of AgriQuality for the past 25 years so obtaining Certification was easily achieved. As a result of this high standard we are currently exporting to Japan, the U.S.A., Australia, Asia and the U.K. We are, however, constantly seeking new international markets and distributors for our products.
